The Angelitos Classroom K-2

A daily routine is instilled in the classroom, though there is lots of room for flexibility so as to encorporate special moments that arise during our day. A special moment can be very educational for the class, so it is not overlooked, rather highlighted for everyone to discuss and learn from. As a "Reggio Emilia" and "Education For Life" inspired school, we have a different approach to curriculum development than that of a traditional or secular school. Instead of having a concrete plan developed by the teacher; the teacher's ideas, perimeters and tools instilled allowing the children and their energy to determine day’s activities.

On a routine basis the children are using reading, writing and arithmetic through teacher planned activities, as well as through the children’s own curiosities. The children’s academics are applied as they develop and work on personal projects and/or group investigations that they have created and designed for themselves. The teacher acts as a guide prodding the children with questions and offering support as they may need it. There is a reciprocal relationship between the teacher and the child, as they both teach and learn from each other.

Curriculum development therefore happens through the children’s emerging interests influenced by family, friends, teachers and/or their surrounding environment. Collaborative or individual investigation further engages the child and their independent abilities to seek out truth and knowledge. Our program provides activities, curriculum opportunities and materials for the children’s use and exploration.
